Vietnam: Fish processors face raw material shortfall

(vasep.com.vn) Many fish processors establish their own farming areas, provide seed and farming techniques to farmers to overcome raw material shortfall.

Vietnam’s pangasius exporters need 300,000 MT of raw fish for processing in the last months of 2013. However, pangasius production of the Mekong Delta can not satisfy percent of their needs. Only 40 percent out of total 70 pangasius exporters located in the region sourced fish from their own fish farms. The rest can not hold initiative in raw material supply for processing.

Shrimp sector face the same situation. The shrimp supply of Ca Mau province, home to shrimp farming of Vietnam, only meet 40 percent of local processors’ demand.

To overcome the status, many processors establish their own farming areas, provide seed and farming techniques to farmers. Besides, they could sign contracts with farmers to ensure that they will bought all shrimp produced by farmers. Competent authorities and banks play an important role in establishing production chain (feed, farming, processing and exporting) which aims to help processors overcome shortfall of raw material.

In coming time, relevant authorities will guide farmers and processors to build mechanism on sharing mutual benefit and supporting each other in production. Farmers will be guided to reduce production costs, join in production chain and farm fish based on the contracts signed with processors.
