Significant growth of aquaculture exports

Aquaculture product exports have grown apace in recent years, which is a result that the Exporters Association of Peru (ADEX) relate to the enforcement of the Aquaculture Development Act.

From 2002, when the law took effect, to 2011, Peru managed to export aquaculture products for USD 240 million, said the president of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Committee of ADEX, Humberto Speziani.

The manager said that the country has great potential for aquaculture in its coastline, rivers and lakes in the Peruvian highlands. Therefore, he considers it necessary to promote a new aquaculture act that is similar to the current one, as this law expires at the end of the year, reports the agency Andina.

According to Speziani, the Amazon in Peru could become a major global provider -- such as Brazil – if mass production of tilapia, paiche and other fish having high consumer demand is better exploited.

According to reports from ADEX, value-added fisheries and aquaculture generate exports for over USD 1,000 million. Among the main resources traded abroad, squid (giant squid), scallops, shrimp, mahi mahi, horse mackerel, anchovy and trout are highlighted.
