US salmon imports jump more than 9%

Keeping up the trend of the past few months, US salmon imports rose 9.2 percent in tonnage from May 2012 to May 2013, according to statistics released Wednesday from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS).

The salmon, which rose from 114.648 metric tonsin the first five months of 2012 to 125,294 metric tons in the first five months of 2013, also jumped 16.4 percent in value, from $855 million (€656.7 million) to $995 million (€764.2 million).

As with the previous months of 2013, the jump was largely on the back of farmed Atlantic salmon fillets, which increased 22.7 percent from January of May of 2013 compared to the same time period last year.

Atlantic salmon fillets from Chile alone skyrocketed 54.3 percent, the NMFS data shows.
