This brand contributes to reduce the poverty in Giao Thuy and brings to Nam Dinh province the average revenue of VND350 billion per year. For the bivalve mollusk species to continuously affirm its position and reach the international market, Nam Dinh is actively developing the brand of clean and environmental friendly clam.
Nam Dinh province has the largest clam farming area in the North with the average commercial clam production of 17,000 MT per year. Particularly, Giao Thuy district has 1.400 ha with its production of 12,000 MT per year.
Besides affirming the position in the domestic market, this product is also exported to China cross the border. Especially every year, Nam Dinh exports over 3,000 MT of clam to EU. The Service of Aquaculture under the Nam Dinh Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that to expand the consumption system in the domestic market and to export clam to the international market, Nam Dinh are planning farming areas of clam and other mollusks, organizing to farm systematically and build more seed production facilities to supply to farming areas in the province as well as enhancing the quality control of farming areas. The province also offers the branding guideline for this product and Giao Thuy district is chosen to be the first implementation unit.
In 2008, Giao Thuy clam was certified the monopoly brand, the origin of "Giao Thuy clam" and in June 2010, Giao Thuy clam was awarded the Gold Medal and the title "Quality and safe food for the public health". Besides, Giao Thuy clam farming area was recognized as the safe farming area at level B by EU and approved to export to this market. Currently, Nam Dinh is recognized as the first seafood branding locality in the North. It has also been the unique farming area in the North to continuously achieve the food safety standards since 2004.
