Slight down in bivalve mollusk exports

(vasep.com.vn) Like other seafood items, Vietnamese bivalve mollusk exports saw drop in four out of the first six months of 2013. Through June 2013, sales abroad totaled nearly US$438.4 million, down 1.9 percent from the first half of 2012.

Japan’s imports from Vietnam reported a positive trend among Vietnam’s three biggest importers, including the U.S., the EU. Between January and March 2013, shipment to Japan - particularly that of scallops (HS code 030729) - increased by 20 – 150 percent compared to the same period of the previous year.

Exports to Spain and Italy reported high growth in several months, leading to a rise of 18.9 and 51.4 percent in export value of the first half of the year. However, revenue from the EU market rose only 2.7 percent.

Australia and Canada were potential markets of Vietnamese products in the first half of 2013. Due to difficulties from EU and U.S. markets, Vietnamese exporters shifted their consignments to Australia, increasing exports to this destination by 146 percent in January, 280 percent in March, and 10,233 percent in May. Canada also got triple-digit growth in imports of bivalve mollusk from Vietnam in several months.
