Salmon catch in Russia to decline by 30% this year

The volume of salmon catch in Russia’s Far East basin this year may decline by almost 30%, compared to 2012, according to predictions of Russia’s Federal Agency for Fisheries.

This year total catch of salmon in Russia’s Far East is expected to reach 313,300 tons, which almost 30% less than in 2012.

The biggest catch is expected at the east coast of Kamchatka (over 94,000 tons), as well as the east coast of Sakhalin (over 90,000 tons). At the same time the South Kuril region, and the Sea of Okhotsk subarea will decline.

Pink salmon is expected to account the majority of catch, with a production volume of 170,000 tons. The second place is occupied by Siberian salmon, (Hucho taimen) with the catch this year predicted at 91,800 tons.

The volume of catch of sockeye salmon is set at the level of 47,000 tons, while coho salmon  is  4,000 tons, and chinook salmon is 800 tons.
