Jan-Aug 2016: Up 7% in Vietnam crab exports

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first 8 months of this year, Vietnam crab exports totaled US$75.8 million, up 7.2% compared to the same period last year.

Top 7 major importing markets, including the U.S., Japan, EU, China, ASEAN, Australia and Taiwan, accounted for 93% of Vietnam crab exports. As of Aug 2016, the exports to the U.S and ASEAN posted a decline, while those to the remaining 5 major markets showed a rise with the largest increase in China.

The U.S: Vietnam crab exports to the U.S. in Aug 2016 gained US$6.8 million, up 56% compared to the same period last year. However, the figure in the first 8 months of this year estimated at nearly US$30.2 million, down 12.5% year on year.

The U.S. remained as the largest buyer of Vietnam crabs in the first 8 months of this year, accounting for 39.8% of total export value.

Japan: Vietnam crab exports to Japan in Aug 2016 valued at US$4.6 million, a sharp rise of 253.8% compared to Jul 2016 and going up 134% from the same period last year. The total figure in the first 8 months of 2016 estimated at US$15.2 million, up 19.4% year on year.

Through Aug 2016, Japan ranked the 3rd in top 7 largest importing markets of Vietnam crab, with the share of 20%.

EU: In Aug 2016, Vietnam crab exports to the EU reached US$1.9 million, down over the same period last year. However, the figure in Jan-Aug 2016 was US$13.1 million, up 4.5% year on year. As of Aug 2016,  the EU slipped to the 3rd rank in top 7 major importers of Vietnam crabs, taking up 17.3%.

France, the UK, the Netherlands and Belgium continued to be 4 main importing markets of Vietnam crabs in the EU bloc. In particular, France remained as the largest importer with the proportion of over 40.5%, followed by the UK with 28.2%, the Netherlands with 21.4%, and Belgium with 3.8%.

In particular, exports to France and Britain reported a climb, while those to the Netherlands and Belgium recorded the slump compared to the same period last year.

China: In Aug this year, Vietnam crab exports to the China continued to showed the good growth. This market was the 4th largest crab importer from Vietnam, with the proportion of 11.4%.

As of Aug 2016, Vietnam crab shipments to this market hit nearly US$8.7 million, up 132.3% from the same period last year.
