Fish landings in August 2013 declined due to storms

(vasep.com.vn) According to Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, fishing activities in August 2013 faced difficulties due to rough seas caused by two tropical storms. The storms hurt fishing activities of many offshore fishing vessels.

In August 2013, local fish landings were estimated to reach 200,000 MT, down 5 percent from the same period last year. In the first 8 months of 2013, the figure was gauged to a achieve 1.728 million MT, up 4.2 percent compared to the same period of 2012. In which, marine catch was estimated to be 1.611 million MT, up 4.3 percent.

Ocean tuna landings continued to decrease due to rocketing fuel price, high cost for offshore fishing while sharp fall in selling price of the fish in international markets. Going offshore fishing fetched no profit for many fishermen at that time.

In Jan-Aug 2013, tuna catch in Phu Yen province was estimated to reach 4,130 MT, down 31.4 percent from the same period of 2012; Binh Dinh province registered 6,201 MT, down 22.8 percent; Khanh Hoa province registered 2,500 MT.
