Better prices lead to record salmon exports in August

The value of exports of Norwegian salmon in August totalled NOK 3.3 billion (EUR 411.5 million), NOK 795 million (EUR 99.1 million) more compared to the same month last year. In the same period, the volume of exports was up by 7,680 tonnes, to a total of 78,000 tonnes.

This year to date, the value of Norwegian salmon exports has totalled NOK 24 billion (EUR 2,993 million), a figure representing an increase of NOK 5.2 billion (EUR 648.5 million) year on year. In the same period, the volume of exports fell by 46,000 tonnes to 579,000 tonnes.

“The growth in the value of exports is due to increased prices for Norwegian salmon resulting from continued strong growth in demand combined with reduced volume of salmon from Norway,” explains Paul Aandahl, manager salmon and trout with the Norwegian Seafood Council.

Continued high export prices for Norwegian salmon

The average price for fresh whole Norwegian salmon in August was NOK 41.45 (EUR 5.17) per kg, NOK 13.48 (EUR 1.68) higher than in August last year. The average price in August was NOK 2.61 (EUR 0.32) lower than the average price in July.

Increased share of exports to EU

The volume of exports of Norwegian salmon in August fell by 9 per cent from August last year, but exports to the EU were down by only 4 per cent. Hence, the EU accounted for 69 per cent of exports of Norwegian salmon in August this year compared to 65 per cent in August last year. Poland was the biggest market for Norwegian salmon exports in August, while France was the market of greatest value.

Reduced exports to Russia

In August, the volume of exports of Norwegian salmon to Russia was down by 25 per cent from August last year. Despite this, the value of exports was 12 per cent higher over the same period.

Downturn in exports to Asia

The volume of exports of Norwegian salmon to Asia in August was down by 17 per cent compared to August last year. This exceeds the average decline across all markets. Japan, China and Hong Kong accounted for the biggest drop in exports.

Growth in exports of Norwegian fjord trout

Exports of Norwegian fjord trout in August were up in value by NOK 50 million (EUR 6.2 million) to a total of NOK 214 million (EUR 26.7 million), compared to the same month last year. In the same period, the volume of exports was down by 1 per cent. The biggest markets for Norwegian fjord trout in August were Russia, Belarus and Thailand.
