2012: Vietnam fisheries industry renovates to develop

(vasep.com.vn) With an aim to make progresses in aquaculture, catching and sustainable development in compliance to Food Safety Act, Vietnam fisheries industry will focus on renovating and creating a breakthrough in seafood quality and sustainable development.
To fulfil the target, Directorate of Fisheries (D-Fish) directs relevant agencies and players in fish sector to modernize and raise fishing capacity, reduce post harvest loss. On the other hand, D-Fish continues to direct the implementation of certificating for wild caught fish exported to EU market as well as applying traceability for caught fish. Models such as groups or teams of boats in fishing, fisheries unions are also applied on the large scale.
In the aspect of aquaculture, D-Fish will strengthen to inspect the quality of sources of fish seed such as pangasius seed, shrimp seed, along with assess and classify seed and feed producing facilities in the important localities. D-Fish will assign local agencies to inspect, monitor seafood processing and trading facilities, the quality of imported fish feed. To minimize production input costs and factors affected badly fish quality, fish industry will push the linkage between fish farming associations and shrimp seed suppliers and feed producers.
Another crucial task is that D-Fish will step up monitoring the application and implementation of VietGAP (Good Agriculture Practice - GAP) to guarantee food safety, traceability, protect farming environment and biodiversity. Besides, D-Fish will draw out long-term plan for investment and trade promotion and prepare agreements in fisheries cooperations with other countries, particularly ASEAN and Africa.
In 2012, D-Fish targeted that total fish production will reach about 5.37 million MT in which aquaculture production reached 3.15 million MT and capture production reached 2.2 million MT. Export turnover of Vietnam seafood in 2012 strives to reach US$6.5 billion, an increase of 5 percent on that of 2011.
