Soc Trang Province: Promoting sustainable shrimp farming models

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) To ensure sustainable shrimp farming and environmental protection, Soc Trang Province emphasizes raising awareness and improving the capacity of shrimp farmers through various forms of communication and by developing and replicating effective models.

One such initiative is the project “Application of biogas systems for waste management and control in brackish water shrimp farming” by ActionAid International in Vietnam, which aims to implement 150 models in the province during the 2024-2026 period. 

Another model, the “Circular shrimp farming” project by GIZ, has been piloted at two locations within the province. Additionally, Soc Trang has successfully developed and applied various effective farming models, including high-tech two- or three-phase farming, VietGAP-certified farming, semi-biofloc technology, and integrated aquaculture systems. Notably, the standout model is high-density shrimp farming using lined ponds combined with the application of advanced and innovative technologies, contributing to increased shrimp production per unit area. 

Furthermore, the province's agricultural sector focuses on integrating digital transformation technologies into production. For instance, automated feeding systems help reduce labor costs and feed waste; farming ponds equipped with automated monitoring systems enable timely responses to environmental fluctuations; and nano-oxygen aeration systems are widely used, especially in intensive and super-intensive multi-phase lined shrimp farming models. 

Brackish water shrimp is considered a key aquaculture product for Soc Trang, ranking third in production volume compared to other provinces in the region. In 2023, the province achieved 53,511.3 hectares of brackish water shrimp farming, with a harvest yield of 206,334 tons.
