Vietnam surimi exports to Japan and EU saw downfall

(vasep.com.vn) In the wake of global economic turmoil, Vietnam’s fish paste and surimi exports to the two main markets, Japan and EU, are encountering a lot of bottlenecks.

From the beginning of the year to June 15th 2013, surimi exports to Japan and EU took the downtrend of over 50 percent from that of the same time of 2012 with an export value of US$8.6 million and US$6.2 million, respectively.

Until June 15th 2013, Japan occupied the third position behind ASEAN as importer of Vietnam surimi, falling from the second place held in the same time of 2012. In the first 5 months of 2013, surimi exports to Japan decreased for 25.3 – 73.5 percent and until the first half of June 2013, exports continued their decline of 50.3 percent against that of the same time of 2012. At that time, the market share of Vietnam’s surimi exports to Japan fell to 9.7 percent from 15 percent. Vietnam is one of three main suppliers of surimi for Japan thanks to its lower export price in comparison with that offered by other suppliers such as Thailand, India and Indonesia.

Between Jan and May 2013, surimi exports to EU saw a decline of 24.2 – 92.5 percent with a year on year basis. This resulted in a decline in the proportion of surimi exports to the region of 6.9 percent from 11 percent of Vietnam’s total surimi export value.

Besides, Vietnam surimi shipment to Asian markets in 2013 was on the increase, given to an instable demand from large markets (Japan, the U.S. and EU). Among Asian markets importing surimi from Vietnam, for the year to date, ASEAN and China reported high growth of 21.6 percent and 18.8 percent respectively.
