(vasep.com.vn) To develop fisheries industry sustainably and to creat stable profits to fishers, relevant authorities targets to reduce nearshore fishing and boost offshore fishing.
By 2020, the country targets to reach 2.4-2.6 million MT of fish landings. Accordingly, onshore wild fish catch is expected to fall to 0.8-0.87 million MT from the present level of 1.2 million MT while offshore fish catches will increase from 1 million MT to 1.4-1.53 million MT.
There are about 130,000 fishing vessels in Vietnam. In the next 7 years, the country will reduce the number to 110,000 ones. The number of boats with a capacity of under 20 CV are hoped to cut to 34.5 percent from 49 percent. Boats of more than 90 CV may rise to 27.3 percent from 20.7 percent, boats of 20-90CV may surge to 38.2 percent from 30.4 percent.
Fishermen are oriented to intensify to catch species with high economic value like shrimp, cephalopod, tuna, mackerel and apply new technologies to reduce post harvest loss to 10 percent by 2020 from 20 percent currently.
Competent agencies are considering to grant fishing quotas for fishing boats to preserve fish stocks in Vietnam waters.
