Tra Vinh: Fall in clam farming area in 2010

According to Tra Vinh Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the clam farming area at the locality this year might decrease due to shortage of clam seeds. In addition, many clam farmers, who suffered losses in the previous crop, are now facing investment capital shortage.

Tra Vinh now has 3,783ha of alluvial grounds along the coastline, which is used for clam farming by local farmers in the districts of Duyen Hai, Cau Ngang and Chau Thanh. In 2009, these districts stocked 235MT of clam seeds, and in 2010 they plan to stock 400-500MT of clam seeds in an area of 3,500ha. Though the clam crop this year started few months ago, farmers have not so far had enough seeds for stocking. To add to this, clam seed sales price is reported to increase 1.5-2 times compared with 2009.
