Ocean freight to increase by US$640 – 1,200 for a 20 feet container
(VASEPNews) Since 1st March 2012, Vietnam ocean freight has increased by US$240 – 800 upon each different foreign port. The hike is predicted not to be ended soon, said VASEP’s member enterprises.
Shipping companies announced that from 1st April, they would charge goods from Vietnam to the European ports with a general rate increase (GRI) of US$400 per a 20-feet container. After a month, the same GRI level will be applied for goods shipped to the U.S.
Currently, shipping cost in Vietnam is 10 – 15 percent higher than that of other countries like Thailand and the Philippines.
In the next three months, ocean freight will rocket by US$640 – 1,200 per a 20-feet container. The new charge may have large impact on export of Vietnam seafood to the EU and the U.S.
