Moderate rise in June fishing landings

This increase was primarily due to higher landings of anchovy for indirect human consumption, according to the latest Statistical Bulletin prepared by the Ministry of Production (Produce).

On assessing the first six months of 2013, it appears that the landings were down by 13.5 per cent over the same period last year, changing from 3,289,800 tonnes in 2012 to 2,844,200 tonnes.

And in the first six months a total of 587,700 tonnes of resources was used for direct consumption, 12.4 per cent less than last year (670,600 tonnes).

For the preparation of frozen products 64,200 tonnes were landed last June while in the same month of 2012 a total of 72,800 tonnes had been unloaded.

In the first half of this year, the accumulated landings for the industry totalled 313,900 tonnes, representing 14.8 per cent less than in the same period in 2012, when 368,400 tonnes were unloaded.

On the other hand, the fishery resources used by the canning industry in June 2013 totalled 8,800 tonnes compared with 4,600 tonnes in the same month last year.

Between January and June, a decrease of 36.7 per cent was recorded in the resources used by the canning industry: 50,500 tonnes compared to 79,800 tonnes in the same period of 2012.
