Lam Dong: Cold water fish farming on the rise

Farming cold water fish has been developed for the last two years in Lam Dong province. So far, there have been nine units, cooperatives and individual farmers, involved in this business a water surface area of 41ha.

According to Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the provincial cold water fish output this year might reach 300MT. Farming cold water fish is reported to gain high economic efficiency in Lac Duong district and Da Lat city. Currently, some Vietnamese and foreign companies are studying actual conditions in the districts of Di Linh, Don Duong, Dam Rong and Bao Loc townlet to invest in farming cold water fish.

However, cold water fish farming in Lam Dong is facing numerous obstacles concerning high investment and unstable sources of fries and feed.

In addition, research in fish feed has not received right investment.

Cold water fish is considered one species under the provincial preferable development plan, namely “Hi-Tech Agriculture Programme”, but so far neither an Aquaculture Development Plan in general nor a Cold water fish Development Plan has been developed by Lam Dong authorities.

Cold water fish marketing is grappling with difficulties when there has been neither trade promotion nor brand building activity. (VietFishNews)
