Japan seafood inventories fall 9%

Statistics for the distribution of chilled marine foods in Japan show the country’s warehouse inventory at the end of July came to 833,480 metric tons, down 9 percent from the same month a year ago.

Out of the total amount, frozen foods were 709,317 metric tons, down 10 percent, according to the latest figures released by the fisheries policy planning department at the Fisheries Agency.

In July, salmon inventories were down 16 percent to76,726 metric tons; squid was down 23 percent to 41,996 metric tons; mackerel was down 36 percent to 38,964 metric tons; and shell fish inventories were down 9 percent to 31,743 metric tons.

On the other hand, tuna inventories jumped 8 percent to a total of 48,443 metric tons.

Pollack surimi was also up 17 percent to 33,203 metric tons; octopuses, up 33 percent to 18,432 metric tons; sardines, up 7percent to 26,835 metric tons; herring, up 48 percent to 14,145 metric tons; pollack, up 52 percent to 4,380 metric tons; and marlins, up 4 percent to 2,527 metric tons.

In terms of preserved items, there was a 6 percent fall to 56,920 metric tons. Especially, cod roe (20,779 metric tons) and salmons (3,479 metric tons) declined by 2 percent and 32 percent, respectively.
