Between January and July 2013 a total of 127,531 tonnes of fresh fish entered the ports of Spain. This volume represents a decrease of 5.6 per cent compared to the same period in 2012, when 135,131 tonnes were unloaded, reported Puertos del Estado.
According to a report issued by the entity under the Ministry of Development, in July 21,602 tonnes of fresh fish were landed, 6.1 per cent less than in the same month last year (22,982 tonnes).
The port of Vigo concentrated July’s largest landings: it received 7,953 tonnes, 4.2 per cent more than during the same month in 2012 (7,627 tonnes).
Meanwhile, in the first seven months of this year 39,990 tonnes were landed in this important Galician port, 2.2 per cent less than in the same period in 2012 (40,902 tonnes).
In second place was located the port of A Coruña, with 25,289 tonnes that entered between January and July, 5.1 per cent less than in the same period in 2012 (26,670 tonnes); and then it was followed by Pasajes with 14,702 tonnes.
Cartagena Port was the one that registered the largest increase in landings, changing from 16.5 per cent: it had received 314 tonnes in the first seven months of 2012, and in the same period in 2013 it received 366 tonnes.
Other ports in which there were significant increases were that of the Bay of Cadiz, with 13,486 tonnes (15.8 per cent more than between January and July, 2012); and that of Tarragona, which received 1,746 tonnes (15.2 per cent more).
According to the latest report, the largest decrease occurred in the port of Barcelona: it received only 100 tonnes of fresh fish in the first seven months, 91.9 per cent less than in the same period of 2012, when landings totalled 1,245 tonnes.
Another port where there was a significant decrease in fresh fish landings was that of Las Palmas: 105 tonnes were landed compared to 340 tonnes between January and July, 2012, that is to say, 69.1 per cent less.
In the port of Algeciras Bay the fall in fresh fish landings was 65.7 per cent: this terminal received 211 tonnes while in the same period last year 616 tonnes had been unloaded there.
