Exporting live lobster and grouper in the official way

(vasep.com.vn) A project on exports of lobster and grouper in the official way was recently approved by Khanh Hoa People’s Committee. This is the first time live fish of the locality is exported in the way.

Live lobster and grouper in Vietnam’s South Central region get low value as they were mainly sold in unofficial cross-border trade. So far, fishermen got little profits.

Each year, Khanh Hoa province produced 1,000 MT of lobsters and 500 MT of groupers but most of them were sold in unofficial cross-border trade, making authorized agencies tough in management and collection of taxes.

According to the project, lobster and grouper species will be purchased from local farmers and classified to export by a company. Live marine products are shipped by vessels and this is a new model to sustainably develop for local marine aquaculture.

Currently, Khanh Hoa exported 22 MT of groupers per month. Exported fish products were mostly farmed in waters in Cam Ranh and surrounding provinces.

The province plans to import a new strain of highly-profit giant grouper from Taiwan to raise to satisfy demands from foreign buyers. The province is also organizing training courses on farming technology for fish farmers as well as find markets for these products.
