Difficulties for surimi exports to the EU

(vasep.com.vn) Through October 15th, 2013, Vietnam surimi products exported to 11 European markets for total revenue of US$13 million, down 45.2 percent against the same period of 2012.

This kind of products kept showing drop of 0.8 – 92.5 percent in consecutive months in the first three quarters of this year, according to Vietnam Customs.

In the first quarter, the EU ranked fourth among Vietnam’s surimi importers. Since April, sales to the block started to slide to the fifth position in the top ten importers, after China.

Vietnam saw decline of 12.5 – 87.4 percent in surimi shipments to most markets in the EU in terms of value. In which, Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden got a sharp drop of more than 80 percent. France, Spain and Germany all reduced 30 percent of their surimi import value.

The 2013 has been as a tough year for Vietnamese surimi exporters, as sales to most Western European countries downed. France was the biggest surimi buyers of Vietnam with a proportion of 64 percent in EU surimi imports; but its purchase stumbled this year. Spain surimi purchase was also lower due to persistent economic crisis.
