In the opinion of many exporters, outputs for Vietnam cephalopods are now quite good. They have received many orders from their partners, and market demand is currently high. However, they are facing with raw material shortage for processing while the import price of raw materials is relatively high and fluctuant due to low catch by countries.
While cephalopods exports increased, bivalve mollusk exports in the first two months of the year declined. According to statistics of Customs of Vietnam, up to 15 March 2011 total bivalve mollusk exports decreased 7.5 percent in volume and 9.1 percent over the same period last year, of which exports to EU had the biggest drop in both volume and value.
So far, EU regulation on establishing a system of preventing, deterring and eliminating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing is still causing many problems for Vietnam exporters.
On 15 April 2011, MARD has issued Circular No. 28 regulating certification and confirmation for caught marine fish exported EU market. The Circular is based on the comments from the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG-MARE) and Vietnam fisheries situation. The Circular has many changes compared to the previous regulation to create more favorable conditions for certification and confirmation for caught marine fish exported EU market. Hopefully, with these simpler procedures, mollusks exports to EU will thrive in coming months.
