Cephalopod exports to the U.S. fell sharply
(vasep.com.vn) Two years ago, Vietnam cephalopod exports to the U.S. reported positive growth, even marked two or three digit growth in some months on par with the previous year. However, through August 2013, exports of the item to the market got the continuous reduction of 30.5 – 96 percent in each month over 2012. This is the deepest decline in the past 5 years.
Cephalopod exports may continue to slump until the year end. The decrease in cephalopod exports was attributable to lack of raw material, downfall in raw material import. Besides, Vietnam exporters want to remain cephalopod exports to traditional markets such as South Korea, Japan, EU.
Vietnam is the 9th largest supplier of dried, salted, in brine octopus to the U.S., however the item from Vietnam only occupied 3.5 percent of the market’s total imports. While Philippines accounted for 19.5 percent, China made up 17 percent and Spain gained 13 percent.
