(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Alongside the development of high-tech shrimp farming, Ha Tinh Province is accelerating the cultivation of high-value freshwater aquatic species, with red tilapia emerging as an effective and sustainable farming model.

According to Ha Tinh’s fisheries sector, many farmers have shifted from traditional farming methods to intensive, semi-intensive, and cage farming systems for red tilapia in order to improve productivity and better control diseases. Current farming models focus on applying modern technologies, managing water quality, and adopting safe farming practices in line with VietGAP standards.
In addition to red tilapia, local farmers are also expanding the farming of snakehead fish, catfish, black carp, and other specialty species. However, red tilapia is considered to have significant advantages thanks to its ease of farming, strong adaptability to pond and reservoir conditions, and stable market demand.
At present, Ha Tinh has around 7,360 hectares of aquaculture area, producing more than 17,000 metric tons annually with a total value exceeding VND 800 billion. Under its new development strategy, the province continues to prioritize investment in farming infrastructure, support the application of high technologies, and encourage market linkages to improve production efficiency for freshwater fish farmers.
Industry officials believe that developing red tilapia farming toward commercial-scale production, biosecurity, and integrated supply chains will help diversify domestic seafood products while creating more stable livelihoods for rural communities living near rivers, reservoirs, and converted farming areas in Ha Tinh.
