Do thiếu nguyên liệu và kéo theo là giá nguyên liệu thủy sản trong nước tăng mạnh, nên Trung tâm tin học và thống kê, Bộ Nông nghiệp và Phát triển nông thôn đã đưa ra dự báo kim ngạch xuất khẩu thủy sản năm nay ở mức 6 tỉ đô la, giảm 108 triệu đô la so với dự báo trước đó.

Sản lượng khai thác thuỷ sản tháng 8/2011 ước đạt 254.000 tấn, đưa sản lượng khai thác 8 tháng đầu năm lên con số 1.730 ngàn tấn, tăng gần 1% so với cùng kỳ năm 2010, trong đó sản lượng cá đạt 1.619 ngàn tấn. Các tỉnh có sản lượng khai thác đạt khá như Bình Định (hơn 94 ngàn tấn), Bình Thuận (hơn 112 ngàn tấn), Bà Rịa Vũng Tàu (hơn 181 ngàn tấn), Kiên Giang (hơn 268 ngàn tấn) và Cà Mau (hơn 106 ngàn tấn).<div align="justify"> </div> Sản lượng nuôi trồng thuỷ sản tháng 8 ước đạt 282.000 tấn, đưa tổng sản lượng nuôi trồng của 8 tháng đạt 1.845 ngàn tấn, tăng 5,3% so với cùng kỳ năm 2010, trong đó sản lượng cá tra đạt hơn 700 ngàn tấn.<div align="justify"> </div> Xuất khẩu thuỷ sản 8 tháng đầu năm 2011 đạt 3,7 tỉ đô la, tăng 24,4% so với cùng kỳ năm trước. Giá trị xuất khẩu tăng mạnh tại các thị trường lớn như Mỹ, Trung Quốc và Italia theo thứ tự lần lượt là 42,7%, 57,3% và 45,1%. Giá trị xuất khẩu đạt mức cao do giá tôm xuất khẩu trung bình trong thời gian qua có sự tăng trưởng đáng kể, khoảng 15,6% so với cùng kỳ năm ngoái với mức 9,53 đô la/kg. Thị trường thủy sản tại Nhật Bản vẫn chưa thực sự phục hồi do nhu cầu không cao. Theo Hải quan Nhật Bản, 6 tháng đầu năm 2011 tổng nhập khẩu tôm HLSO và HOSO nguyên liệu đạt 83.675 tấn, trị giá trên 86.675 triệu Yên (khoảng 836,8 triệu đô la), giảm 3% về lượng và 2% về giá trị so với cùng kỳ năm ngoái. Giá trung bình nhập khẩu là 819 Yên (10 đô la)/kg.<div align="justify"> </div> Tuy nhiên, giá tôm nguyên liệu có xu hướng tăng: giá tôm thẻ chân trắng từ 55.000-60.000 đồng/kg, tăng lên 85.000-93.000 đồng/kg; tôm sú loại 30 con/kg từ 160.000-175.000 đồng/kg, tăng lên 210.000-225.000 đồng/kg. Gần đây nhất, trong tuần qua, theo thông tin mà TBKTSG Online có được, <a href="http://www.thesaigontimes.vn/Home/nongsan/tintucthitruong/60583/DBSCL-Gia-tom-su-tiep-tuc-tang.html" target="_blank">giá tôm sú tại các tỉnh ĐBSCL tiếp tục tăng nóng</a>, đạt mức kỷ lục mới và nhiều nhà máy đang thiếu nguyên liệu nên dẫn tới cạnh tranh mua tôm, càng đẩy giá tôm sú lên cao. <a href="http://www.thesaigontimes.vn/Home/nongsan/tintucthitruong/60386/DBSCL-Diep-khuc-thieu-ca-tra-lai-toi.html" target="_blank">Nguy cơ thiếu cá tra vào các tháng cuối năm</a> rất có khả năng xảy ra do sau một thời gian dài cá tra rớt giá mạnh.<div align="justify"> </div> Từ nhận định của mình, Trung tâm tin học và thống kê, Bộ Nông nghiệp và Phát triển nông thôn dự báo giá trị xuất khẩu thủy sản cả năm 2011 giữ vững ở mức hơn 6 tỉ đô la, giảm so với  con số  dự báo 6,108 tỉ đô la do khó khăn về nguyên liệu.
