ASEAN, South Korea, China, Japan, Russia, EU, Taiwan, and the US continue to be the eight largest importers of Vietnamese fish paste and surimi in the first half of 2020, accounting for 97.5% of the total fish cake and surimi export value. Compared to the same period in 2019, Vietnam's fish paste and surimi exports to these markets have largely decreased. Among the eight main importers, Vietnam's fish cake and surimi exports to China, Taiwan, and the US rose, and exports to the remaining markets fell.
ASEAN remained the largest fish cake and surimi importer of Vietnam in this period. The export value to this market as of June 2020 reached US$45.9 million, down 21.4% compared to the same period in 2019. In 2020, Vietnamese fish cake and surimi exports to ASEAN were not stable, but the share of this market in the first half has increased to 33% from 30% in the same period in 2019.
Despite the severe influence of the Covid-19 epidemic, Vietnamese fish paste and surimi exports to China and the US still grew positively over the same period in 2019. Vietnamese fish paste and surimi exports to China in the first half of 2020 reached US$ 18.6 million, up 24.6%. The export of this item to the US reached over US$1 million, up 75% over the same period in 2019.

According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, this South American country imported nearly 3 million USD of tuna products from Vietnam in the first 2 months of 2024, an increase of 58% over the same period in 2023.
Economic and social development activities, overexploitation, pollution, diseases, and climate change have adversely affected the ecological environment, leading to a severe decline or the extinction of many precious indigenous aquatic species.
