Whitefish supply shortages create new opportunities for Vietnam's pangasius in the EU

News 08:36 30/10/2026
(vasep.com.vn) In the first nine months of 2026, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the EU reached approximately $148 million, up 12% compared to the same period in 2025. In September 2026 alone, export turnover to this market hit $18 million, a 27% year-on-year increase. Despite diverging demand across member states, the EU remains a market with growth potential for Vietnamese pangasius, particularly as supplies of several traditional whitefish species face mounting pressure.

Germany, Spain and Poland record positive growth

The Netherlands remained the largest EU market for Vietnamese pangasius in the first nine months of 2026, with a turnover of $36 million, up 2% year-on-year. Germany ranked second at $30 million (up 39%), followed by Spain at $18 million (up 19%) and Belgium at $16 million (up 2%).

Notably, Poland recorded an export turnover of $8 million (up 42%), and Lithuania reached $5 million (up 56% year-on-year). These high-growth markets indicate that ample room for export expansion exists beyond the EU’s traditional importing destinations.

Value-Added pangasius exports grow but market share remains small

By product category, frozen pangasius fillets and cuts (HS0304) continued to dominate, reaching $136 million in the first nine months of 2026 - an 11% year-on-year increase that accounts for 92% of total pangasius exports to the EU. Meanwhile, fresh, frozen, or dried whole/cut pangasius (HS0304) reached $9 million, up 24%, making up 6% of the total. Notably, value-added processed pangasius (HS16) hit $3 million, a 22% increase.

The growth in processed products is an encouraging sign that exports of higher-value offerings are gaining momentum. However, this category still accounts for only around 2% of total export value, underscoring the sector’s continued reliance on frozen fillets.

Moving forward, expanding value-added processing, diversifying product offerings and meeting increasingly stringent requirements for quality, traceability and sustainability will be essential for Vietnamese exporters seeking to increase the value of their shipments to the EU.

Whitefish supply constraints open opportunities for Vietnam's pangasius

Amidst supply pressures on certain whitefish species such as cod and pollock, Vietnamese pangasius has an opportunity to strengthen its competitiveness in the EU. Its large-scale supply capacity, relatively competitive pricing and ability to meet demand for frozen fillets make it a potential alternative for retailers, food processors and foodservice operators.

Nevertheless, to capitalize on this opportunity, Vietnamese businesses must overcome the EU's escalating demands regarding quality, food safety, traceability, and sustainability. International certification schemes, supply chain transparency requirements and pressure to reduce carbon footprints may increase compliance costs, particularly for businesses that have yet to establish comprehensive environmental management systems and emissions data.

In the coming period, pangasius enterprises need to diversify their intra-EU markets and invest in sustainable production. Strengthening traceability, monitoring emissions and complying with international standards will be critical to sustaining growth and enhancing Vietnamese pangasius’s position in the European market.
