Seafood exports up 33 per cent in July

The value of Norwegian seafood exports in July totalled NOK 4.7 billion (EUR 601.8 million), which is an increase of no less than NOK 1.2 billion (EUR 153.6 million) or 33 per cent compared to July 2012.

This year to date, the value of Norwegian seafood exports has totalled NOK 31.5 billion (EUR 4 billion), an increase of NOK 2.9 billion (EUR 371.3 million) or 10 per cent compared to the same period last year.

“The growth in the value of seafood exports is attributable primarily to increased prices for Norwegian salmon,” explains Egil Ove Sundheim, director of market information with the Norwegian Seafood Council. “In July, the average export price of fresh Norwegian salmon topped NOK 45 (EUR 5.8) per kg. This is an increase of 10 per cent compared to the previous month.”

Norwegian salmon exports hit new heights

The value of Norwegian salmon exports in July totalled NOK 3.3 billion (EUR 422.5 million), an impressive increase of NOK 1.1 billion (EUR 140.8 million) or 48 per cent compared to July last year. This year to date, the value of Norwegian salmon exports has totalled NOK 20.7 billion (EUR 2.6 billion), up by NOK 4.5 billion (EUR  576.2 million) or 28 per cent from the same period last year. In July, the average price for fresh whole Norwegian salmon was NOK 45 per kg, compared to NOK 27 (EUR  3.4) in July 2012. As in the previous month, France and Poland were the biggest importers of Norwegian Salmon.

In July, exports of Norwegian Fjord trout totalled NOK 221 million (EUR 28.3 million). This is an increase of NOK 99 million (EUR 12.7 million) or 81 per cent. This year to date, the value of exports of Norwegian Fjord trout has totalled NOK 1.2 billion (EUR 153.6 million), up by NOK 289 million (EUR 37 million) or 30 per cent compared to the same period in 2012. The biggest markets for Norwegian Fjord trout are Russia and Belarus.

Exports of herring down, mackerel up

In July, exports of Norwegian herring fell in value by NOK 97 million (EUR 12.4 million) or 45 per cent to a total of NOK 118 million (EUR 15.1 million). For the year to date, the value of exports of Norwegian herring has totalled NOK 1.4 billion (EUR 179.2 million), a decline of NOK 1 billion  (EUR 128 million) compared to the same period in 2012. The biggest markets for Norwegian herring are Russia and Germany.

Mackerel exports from Norway were up in value in July by NOK 12 million (EUR 1.5 million) to a total of NOK 82 million (EUR 10.5 million). This year to date, exports of mackerel have fallen in value by NOK 433 million (EUR 55.4 million) to a total of NOK 723 million (EUR 92.6 million). The biggest markets for mackerel are Russia and China.

Decline in exports of clipfish and salted fish

In July, exports of clipfish fell in value by NOK 46 million (EUR 5.9 million) to a total of NOK 182 million (EUR 23.3 million). This figure breaks down into NOK 89 million (EUR 11.4  million) for Norwegian Saithe and NOK 79 million (EUR 10.1 million) for Norwegian cod, with the remainder accounted for by ling, torsk and other groundfish. The biggest market for Norwegian cod clipfish is Portugal, with Brazil the biggest market for Norwegian Saithe clipfish.

The value of exports of salted fish including fillets in July fell by NOK 6 million to a total of NOK 33 million (EUR 4.2 million), of which NOK 29 million (EUR 3.7 million) was accounted for by Norwegian cod. Portugal is the biggest market for salted fish.

Fresh and frozen Norwegian cod exports up

Exports of fresh Norwegian cod including fillets from fishery in July increased in value by NOK 6 million (EUR 768,250) to a total of NOK 31 million (EUR 3.9 million). Exports of frozen Norwegian cod including fillets also increased in value in July, by NOK 102 million (EUR 13 million) to a total of NOK 191 million (EUR 24.4 million).
