(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In March 2026, Vietnam’s pangasius export value reached USD 182 million, up 1% compared to the same period in 2025. Cumulatively, exports in the first three months of 2026 totaled USD 514 million, an increase of 17% year-on-year, indicating that the growth momentum is being maintained despite signs of slowdown in some markets during March.

China Drives Growth

In March 2026, exports to China continued to play a leading role. Export value to this market reached USD 50 million, up 40% year-on-year. Stable consumption demand, along with advantages in geography and logistics, helped China maintain its position as the largest market for Vietnamese pangasius.

In the U.S., export value in March 2026 reached USD 29 million, down 1% compared to the same period. Although demand remained stable, the market was affected by price competition and tariff-related policy factors, influencing importers’ purchasing sentiment. Similarly, exports to Brazil reached USD 12 million, down 41%, reflecting demand adjustments after a period of strong growth.

On the other hand, several markets recorded positive growth. In March 2026, exports to Thailand reached USD 9 million, up 23% year-on-year, indicating stable regional demand.

By market bloc, exports to CPTPP countries in March 2026 reached USD 34 million, up 8% year-on-year. Within this bloc, the United Kingdom continued its positive growth trend, with exports reaching USD 6 million, up 2%, while exports to Japan reached USD 3 million, slightly down 3%. Notably, demand in these markets is shifting toward farmed fish alternatives due to declining supplies of wild-caught whitefish, creating opportunities for Vietnamese pangasius to expand its market share.

In the European Union, exports in March 2026 reached USD 14 million, down 27% year-on-year.

Frozen Pangasius Fillets Continue to Dominate

In terms of product structure, cumulative data through March 2026 shows that frozen pangasius products continued to dominate. Exports of products under HS code 03 reached USD 504 million, accounting for 98% of total export value, up 18% year-on-year. Of this, frozen pangasius fillets (HS0304) alone reached USD 422 million, up 19%, remaining the key export product. In contrast, processed pangasius products (HS16) reached USD 10 million, accounting for 2% and declining 14%, indicating that the potential of value-added segments has yet to be fully realized.

Overall, pangasius exports in March 2026 showed signs of slowing after strong growth in the first two months. However, supported by growth in Asian markets and the competitive advantage of frozen fillet products, Vietnam’s pangasius sector maintained positive growth momentum in March 2026 and continues to show potential for further market expansion in the coming period.
