In the month of March, seafood to the value of NOK 5.6 (€0.675) billion was exported. This represents an increase of 22 percent or nearly a billion krone compared to last year.
– Very strong demand for salmon and incredible skrei fisheries this winter are the main reasons why we are seeing new export records in Q1, says Egil Ove Sundheim, Market Information Director at the Norwegian Seafood Council.
Increase in fresh and frozen cod
Export of fresh cod, including filets, amounted to NOK 770 (€92.852) million in Q1. This represents an increase of 66 percent or NOK 306 (€36.9) million compared to Q1 2013. The export volume increased by 15,000 tonnes to a total of 37,000 tonnes in the same period. In March, fresh cod exports, including filets, amounted to NOK 261 (€31.473) million. This is an increase of 35 percent or NOK 68 (€8.2) million, compared to March last year.
Export of frozen cod, including filets, amounted to NOK 657 (€79.226) million in Q1. This represents an increase of 58 percent or NOK 240 (€28.941) million compared to Q1 2013. The quantity of exports increased in the same period by 14,000 tonnes to a total of 36,000 tonnes. In March the export of frozen cod, including filets, amounted to NOK 191 (€23.032) million, representing an increase of 53 percent or NOK 66 (€7.959) million compared to March last year.
Salmon exports on the rise
NOK 10.7 (€1.29) billion worth of salmon was exported in Q1. This represents an increase of 33 percent or NOK 2.6 (€0.314) billion compared to Q1 2013. In the month of March alone, salmon was exported to the tune of NOK 3.7 (€0.446) billion. Compared to March last year, this represents an increase of 27 percent or NOK 790 (€95.264) million. The average price for whole, fresh Norwegian salmon in March was NOK 43.88 (€5.291) per kilo compared to NOK 37.59 (€4.533) in March last year. Poland and France were the biggest buyers of salmon from Norway.
Trout exports increased by 30 percent or NOK 146 (€17.606) million in Q1 to a total value of NOK 632 (€76.211) million. In March the export of Norwegian trout amounted to NOK 227 (€27.373) million, representing an increase of 60 percent or NOK 85 (€10.25) million compared to March last year. The largest buyers of Norwegian trout are Russia and Japan.
Growth for clipfish and salt fish
Clipfish exports amounted to NOK 862 (€103.946) million in Q1. This represents an increase of 16 percent or NOK 119 (€14.35) million compared to Q1 2013. The quantity of exports increased in Q1 by 2,500. In March the export of clipfish amounted to NOK 237 (€28.579) million, representing an increase of 37 percent or NOK 65 (€7.838) million compared to March last year.
Salted fish exports amounted to NOK 368 (€44.376) million in Q1. This represents an increase of 34 percent or NOK 93 (€11.215) million compared to Q1 2013. The quantity of exports increased by 2,400 tonnes to a total of 13,354 tonnes. In the month of March, salted fish to the value of NOK 199 (€23.997) million was exported. This is an increase of NOK 48 percent or NOK 65 (€7.838) million compared with March last year.
Herring down, mackerel up
Herring exports amounted to NOK 720 (€86.823) million in Q1. This represents a decline of 13 percent or NOK 107 (€12.903) million compared to Q1 2013. In March herring to the value of NOK 143 (€17.244) million was exported, a decline of 19 percent or NOK 33 (€3.979) million compared to March last year. Russia and Germany are the largest markets for herring.
Mackerel was exported to the tune of NOK 661 (€79.708) million in Q1, representing an increase of 40 percent or NOK 189 (€22.791) million compared with Q1 2013. Exports of mackerel in March amounted to NOK 110 (€13.265) million, an increase of 5 percent or NOK 5 (€0.603) million compared to the same period last year. China and the Netherlands are the most important markets for Norwegian mackerel exports.
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) A project titled "Sustainable Shrimp Industry Governance" has been launched in Ca Mau Province with the aim of supporting the transition of the province's shrimp industry toward higher quality, lower emissions, stronger governance capacity, improved supply chain traceability, and the development of a sustainable shrimp brand that meets the increasingly stringent requirements of export markets.
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Khanh Hoa Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, in collaboration with the Northern Center for Marine Aquaculture Research and the Van Hung Public Service Center, recently organized a training course on disease-free golden pompano seed production. The program is part of a National Agricultural Extension Project aimed at developing industrial-scale seed production models to support sustainable marine aquaculture.

In the first four months of the year, total export turnover reached USD 720 million, up 17% compared to the same period last year. This result reflects improving demand across many markets, as well as the efforts of Vietnamese pangasius enterprises to maintain production, secure orders, and adapt to changing market conditions.

However, to fully capitalize on this potential, the province is focusing on aquaculture zoning, infrastructure investment, and promoting modern, sustainable production.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Seafood businesses need solutions to overcome bottlenecks such as labor shortages, difficulty accessing capital, high input costs, and administrative procedures in order to maintain production, adapt to market fluctuations, and effectively exploit export opportunities.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) As importing markets increasingly focus on biosecurity and traceability, Vietnam has established a relatively comprehensive legal framework and disease management system for aquaculture, covering tilapia farming as well as other cultured species. This system is based on the Law on Animal Health, regulations on the prevention and control of aquatic animal diseases, the National Plan for the Prevention and Control of Major Diseases in Farmed Aquatic Species, and environmental monitoring and early warning programs for aquaculture areas.
