Pangasius farming area in the province in 2016 reached 698 hectares, reducing by 3 per cent compared to the same period of 2015 (720 ha), fulfilling 96 per cent compared to the year’s plan. This brought about pangasius production in 2016 of more than 163 thousand tons, up 7 per cent compared to the same period of 2015 (153 thousand tons), exceeding 2 per cent compared to the year’s plan of 160 thousand tons; productivity was 288.7 tons / ha. Pangasius export turnover in 2016 is estimated at 550 million, up 20 per cent over the same period of 2015.
Regarding pangasius seed production, in 2016 the province’s pangasius seed nursing areas gained 443 ha, bringing about seed production of 1,268 tons. Of which, pangasius fries were 1,160 million and pangasius fingerling were 259 million, reducing by 38 per cent compared to the same period last year and fulfilling 86 per cent compared to the year’s plan of 300 million.
Pangasius farming area under GAP in the province in 2016 was 218.18 ha, including 121.48 ha of VietGAP; 10 ha of BAP; 10 ha of ASC; 15 ha of BMP; 17.5 ha under GlobalGAP. This accounted for 98.3 per cent of total farming area under food safety standards (222.05 ha).
In recent years, implementing the Decision No. 62/2013 / QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on policies which encourage cooperation, linking production to the consumption of agricultural products, until now, the province has 06 pangasius cooperatives on an area of 132.5 ha; 43 households participating in link with the plants on an area of 144 ha; 08 enterprises participating in pangasius with area of 175.2 ha and 80 households with an area of 246.3 hectares.
In 2017, the province targets its pangasius farming areas at 772 ha and strives to achieve 161 thousand tons of pangasius.
To achieve this and develop pangasius farming in the province in a sustainable way, Can Tho province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has submitted the People's Committee of Can Tho City for approving of the project titled "Infrastructure serving pangasius farming for exporting in Tan Loc commune, Thot Not District on an area of 100 ha”. In the near future, according to the master plan on agricultural areas applying high technology by 2020, orientation by 2030, Can Tho will implement the projects on building the agricultural areas applying high technology.

In 2025, the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu aims to earn 1.2 billion USD from exporting shrimp, one of the key export products that accounts for over 95% of its total export value.

In addition to highlighting achievements, the report identifies existing challenges and analyzes future opportunities and threats for the pangasius industry.
