Vietnam is the leading supplier of fresh blue swimming crab to Japan

(vasep.com.vn) According to Japanese Customs, in the first seven months of 2013 imports reported over 7.5 thousand MT of fresh crab and king crab, worth JPY 4.45 billion. These figures were down 1% in volume and 10% in value on those of Jan-Jul 2012. Of that volume 6.7 thousand MT (90 percent) came from Russia, worth JPY 3.67 billion.

Vietnam is the largest supplier of fresh blue swimming crab to Japan in Jan-Jul 2013 with the volume of 11,000 MT, worth JPY 20.7 million. The volume figure occupied over 60 percent of Japan’s total crab imports with the average price was JPY 1,871 per kilogram.

Fresh blue swimming crab imported from Vietnam made up a large proportion in Japan market thanks to its more competitive price than that of China, Philippines and Bangladesh. In Jan-Jul 2013, in Japan market, China’s export price of fresh blue swimming crab reached the highest with JPY 3,815 per kilogram. The next was Philippines (JPY 2,656 per kilogram) and Bangladesh (JPY 2,194 per kilogram).

Out of Japan’s total crab imports, frozen blue swimming crab imports accounted for 18 MT, worth JPY 39.2 million. However, many producers of this product pay attention to Japan market thanks to attractive export price paid by the market. In Jan-Jul 2013, average import price of this product into Japan was JPY 2,200 thousand per kilogram.

Specifically, fish production reached 443,400 tons, up 0.7%; shrimp output was 56,300 tons, up 3.1%; and other seafood products totaled 94,400 tons, down 0.9%.
