Norway: Salmon exports continue to grow

News 15:27 13/09/2014
The value of exports of Norwegian salmon in July totalled NOK 3.3 billion (EUR 418.5 million), an increase of NOK 1.1 billion (EUR 139.5 milion), or 48 per cent compared to July 2012. In the same period, the volume of exports was down by 5,000 tonnes or 7 per cent.

This year to date, the value of Norwegian salmon exports has totalled NOK 20.7 billion (EUR 2.6 billion), up by NOK 4.5 billion (EUR 570.6 million) or 28 per cent compared to the same period last year. “We are seeing continued growth in the value of exports of Norwegian salmon, despite a reduction in export volume,” says Egil Ove Sundheim, director of market information with the Norwegian Seafood Council. “Reduced supply volume from Norway and other producer nations has meant that salmon prices have continued to trend upwards during July.”

The average export price for fresh whole Norwegian salmon in July was NOK 45 (EUR 5.7) per kg. This is an increase of NOK 18 (EUR 2.3) or 67 per cent compared to July 2012, and an increase of NOK 4.2 (EUR 0.5) compared to the previous month.

This year to date, the average export price of fresh whole Norwegian salmon has been NOK 41.2 (EUR 5.2) per kg, up by NOK 11.3  (EUR 1.4) compared to the same period last year.

Exports to Europe down in volume

In July, the volume of exports of Norwegian salmon products totalled almost 72,000 tonnes. Compared to July 2012, this is a decline of 5,000 tonnes or 7 per cent.  Fully 59,000 tonnes or 83 per cent of total Norwegian salmon exports were destined for European markets. The biggest markets continue to be Poland, France and Russia. Of these, only exports to Poland saw growth in July with an increase in export volume of 700 tonnes compared to July 2012.

The downturn in export volume is the same across a number of markets, although the value of exports continues to grow thanks to higher prices.

Strong growth in exports of Norwegian fjord trout

The value of exports of Norwegian fjord trout in July totalled NOK 221 million (EUR 28 million). This is an increase of NOK 99 million (EUR 12.5 million) or 81 per cent compared to July 2012.

At the same time, the volume of exports has increased by 1,000 tonnes to a total of 4,735 tonnes. The biggest market for Norwegian fjord trout is Russia, which imported 2,300 tonnes in July and accounts for 49 per cent of all Norwegian fjord trout exports.

This year to date, the value of exports of Norwegian fjord trout has totalled NOK 1.2 billion (EUR 152.2 million). This is an increase of NOK 289 million (EUR 36.6 million) or 30 per cent compared with the same period in 2012. So far this year, the biggest markets for Norwegian fjord trout have been Russia, Belarus and Japan.
