Ca Mau Province: Seafood exports in the first half of the year increased by 16%

According to the Department of Industry and Trade of Ca Mau province, although affected by the Covid-19 epidemic, the situation of shrimp processing and export in the first 6 months of 2021 in the province achieved very positive results and increased sharply over the same period.

Shrimp production in the first 6 months of the year was estimated at more than 107,000 tons, up 9.5% over the same period in 2020. Processed shrimp production was estimated at 85,250 tons, up 21% over the same period in 2020.

Shrimp export turnover is estimated at 400 million USD, up 16.6% over the same period in 2020.

Ca Mau province has many advantages in aquaculture and fishing, in which the shrimp industry is a key economic sector. Ca Mau is one of the leading provinces in the country in aquaculture, processing and exporting seafood. The province's total shrimp farming area is about 280,000 hectares, with an output of 280,000 tons/year.

Due to the tightly controlled Covid situation in Ca Mau, there have been no positive cases of Covid in the local community, along with the fact that some traditional markets such as the US, EU, China, Japan, Korea ...) is well controlled, so the demand for shrimp products for the restaurant and food service segments is gradually recovering and increasing.

Besides, Vietnam's shrimp exports continue to be favorable because many other shrimp producing countries are facing difficulties because of the Covid-19 epidemic.

Meanwhile, in the first months of this year, the weather is favorable for stocking aquaculture and fishing. The price of raw shrimp has been stable continuously for many months, helping shrimp farmers to be very excited and feel secure in their production.

Ca Mau shrimp exports forecast to grow as planned Mr. Duong Vu Nam - Deputy Director of the Department of Industry and Trade of Ca Mau province, said that currently, free trade agreements (FTAs) are a huge boost to the Vietnamese economy, including Ca Mau.

With this new favorable objective condition, exports will have more markets to develop better in the coming time.

The advantages from the free trade agreements that Vietnam has signed (CPTPP, EVFTA, UKVFTA...) continue to create many advantages when shrimp export turnover through markets increases.

Currently, the province has more than 40 export enterprises, of which 32 seafood processing factories for export. Total processing capacity reaches 250,000 tons/year.

The province's processed shrimp products are competitive in the international market and have been exported to over 60 countries and territories.

In addition, businesses have taken advantage of opportunities and incentives from the above free trade agreements to increase exports.

According to statistics, it is estimated that in the first 6 months of 2021, Ca Mau shrimp export turnover to EVFTA member countries increased by 148.56% over the same period; to CPTPP member countries increased by 9.8%...

Therefore, Ca Mau hopes that with favorable mechanisms brought about by FTAs, it will help Vietnamese enterpreneurs , including units in Ca Mau, accelerate exports to new markets.
