2016: Vietnam pangasius exports to EU may rebound

News 10:56 21/04/2016
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first two months of 2016, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the EU reached US$40.2 million, up 0.4% compared to the same period last year. In particular, pangasius exports to Spain and German posted a rise of 34% and 14.3%, respectively. However, the figure to the Netherlands fell by 11.6%; and the UK with -11.8% over the same period of 2015.

In QI/2015, the euro exchange rate and import-reducing policy in the EU affected seafood suppliers to the EU. Among the 5 largest pangasius importers of Vietnam, pangasius exports to the UK remained the growth in 2015, while exports to the other markets slowed down.

In 2016, Vietnam pangasius exports to the EU expected to increase. According to the Globefish, in 2015, the EU’s imports of frozen pangasius fillets registered the fall both in value and volume. In Mar-Apr 2015, the pangasius import price reached the highest level of US$2.45-US$2.48/kg. In 2015, the total pangasius imports of the EU estimated at 110,000 MT, equal to 2013 and import prices also decreased by US$0.5-1/kg compared to the year prior.

In 2015, whitefish products imported into the EU went up. Of that, the share of frozen cod fillets made up 25.08% of the total import value of whitefish; and frozen Alaska pollock fillets accounted for about 17%. The import value of frozen pangasius and catfish fillets into the EU accounts for about 6.25% of the total import value of whitefish. Main import markets in the EU bloc were Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, and France. (ChartImports of frozen pangasius fillets into EU in 2015)

Building and promoting the image, prestige of Vietnam pangasius is always prioritized to combat unfair competition through campaign of smear Vietnamese pangasius via mass media.  In the EU, Vietnam pangasius must compete with tilapia products from China. With the advantage of competitive price, Vietnam pangasius exporters are making efforts to increase value-added products and market share in the EU market.

Although the overall export picture has yet to brighten significantly, market trends are becoming increasingly diversified rather than moving in a single direction.

 |  08:21 21/05/2026

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) According to Vietnam Customs data, pangasius exports in April 2026 reached USD 206 million, up 18% compared to the same period in 2025 — marking another consecutive month of double-digit growth since the beginning of the year. Cumulative pangasius export turnover in the first four months of 2026 reached USD 720 million, up 17% year-on-year, reflecting the positive growth momentum of this key export product.

Shrimp exports in the first four months of 2026: Stable demand from Asia, rising pressure from the US market

 |  08:55 19/05/2026

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Vietnam’s shrimp exports in the first four months of 2026 maintained positive growth momentum, reaching approximately USD 1.5 billion, up 15% compared to the same period last year. However, behind this result lies diverging trends across markets, as the global shrimp industry continues to face pressure from inflation, high inventories, price competition, and increasing trade risks.

Vietnam’s crab exports in Q1/2026: Strong growth, but caution remains necessary

 |  08:59 14/05/2026

(vasep.com.vn) In the first three months of 2026, Vietnam’s exports of crabs and other crustaceans reached more than USD 93 million, up 23% compared to the same period last year. The result shows that the sector is experiencing a fairly positive recovery, especially in its two key product groups: crabs and swimming crabs. However, behind the growth figures are several concerns: export markets remain highly concentrated, raw material supply is unstable, and trade barriers from the US and EU are becoming increasingly stringent.

 |  08:34 13/05/2026

In Hung My commune alone, there are about 260 super-intensive shrimp farming households covering more than 265 hectares, playing a key role in local economic development.

Following the positive recovery in 2025, production and export activities in Q1/2026 demonstrated the strong adaptability of Vietnam’s seafood business community amid continued global trade volatility, intensifying international competition, and increasingly stringent compliance requirements in import markets.
