GENERAL INFORMATION

Vietnam, with a coastline of over 3,260 kilometers (km) and more than 3,000 islands and islets scattered offshore, plus up to 2,860 rivers and estuaries, has been geographically endowed with ideal conditions for the thriving fishery sector which currently exists.

Great potential of fishery sector in Vietnam is embedded in water bodies of 1.700.000 ha in which 811.700 ha freshwater, 635.400 ha brackish waters and 125.700 ha coves and 300.000 - 400.000 ha wetland areas might be employed for aquaculture development.

The Mekong River Delta in the south and the Red River Delta in the north have been used for wild catch fishing as well as extensive fish farming.

Shrimp and pangasius mostly farmed in the Mekong River Delta, in which, shrimp farmes located in coastal provinces such as Tra Vinh, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Ca Mau, Kien Giang, Ben Tre..

Pangasius farming is developing in many provinces in Mekong River Delta such as Can Tho, Vinh Long, Tien Giang, An Giang, Dong Thap, Soc Trang, Hau Giang, Tra Vinh....

Production in the fishery sector grew at an average rate of 7.05% from 1991 to 2000, and 10% from 2001 to now. Vietnamese fisheries production increased steadily YoY. Aquaculture output tent to sharply rise while capture ouput tend to slow down. In 2023, aquaculture occupied 59%, fishing output occupied 41%. From 2018-2023, ratio of fishing output has decreased from 46% to 41% of total fishery production in Vietnam. In 2023, total aquaculture area was 5.408 million tons, up 3.5%; total fishing output was 3.861 million tons, equal to 2022.

Available fish sources

The Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu earned US$288 million from seafood exports in the first eight months of 2016, fulfilling 55 percent of its yearly target, but dropping nearly 5 percent compared to the same period last year.

The Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta has great demand for advanced technologies to improve its agricultural production and farm and seafood processing for exports, and is seeking to tie up with countries with technological strengths, according to the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Can Tho chapter.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) The total fishery production of Da Nang city (Vietnam) in Jun 2016 hit 3,403 MT, increasing by 0.57% compared to the same period last year. In which, capture output reached 3,401 MT, up 1.25% compared to Jun 2015. The total fishery production in Jan-Jun 2016 estimated at 19,198 MT, up 8.85%, while capture output touched 19,088 MT, up 8.81% over the first 6 months of 2015.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In Jun 2016, aquaculture production of Vietnam estimated to touch 435 thousand MT, up 1.6% year on year. The cumulative figure to Jun 2016 reached 1,584 thousand MT, up 0.6% year on year.

Pelagic fishes such as scads, anchovies, seabream, flying fish, and striped tuna appear constantly in the waters of Central and South-Central Vietnam.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first 6 months of this year, the province of Dong Thap (Vietnam) has 1,405 facilities of pangasius producing, trading and hatching including 89 trading and producing facilities and 1,316 hatcheries.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In 2016, Ca Mau province (Vietnam) is expected to supply 8 billion shrimp seeds for local farmers. This supply of shrimp seed will be quarantined with clear traceability.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first half of 2016, the area for innovated extensive shrimp farming in U Minh district (Ca Mau province, Vietnam) increased by 400 hectares (in some communes: Khanh Lam, Khanh Hoa, Khanh Thuan and Nguyen Phich) to totally over 3,000 hectares.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In Apr 2016, pangasius yield in Dong Thap province was estimated at 30,010 MT, and the figure in the first 4 months of the year was at 109,835 MT. Raw pangasius price recently quoted at VND22,000 - 22,500/kg (fish size of 0.7-0.9 kg/pc), equal to the same period last year.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Total capture and aquaculture production of Hai Phong province in QI/2016 reached 28,060 MT, up 1.26% over the same period last year.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Capture and aquaculture production of Ca Mau in Mar 2016 estimated at 44,500 MT, down 3.26% from previous month, and down 7.29% over Mar 2015. In QI/2016 fisheries production estimated at 135,700 MT, completing 25.60% of the plan, and up 4.38% over the same period of 2015.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Thanks to favorable weather, there were about 90% of vessels in the province of Ninh Thuan, Vietnam engaging in fishing activities after Tet holidays. In Feb 2016, capture output estimated at 7,576 MT; the figure in Jan-Feb 2016 was 10,136 MT.
