Vietnams tuna exports still increase by 20% despite Covid-19

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) As of August 15, 2021, the total value of Vietnam's tuna exports to the Israeli market increased by 34% over the same period in 2020, reaching nearly 25 million USD, accounting for 5 .6% of total tuna export value. Israel continues to be Vietnam's third largest single tuna export market after the US and Italy.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) Vietnam's tuna exports continued to grow well in May 2021, up 48% over the same period in 2020, reaching $66 million. In the first 5 months of 2021, Vietnam's tuna exports reached nearly 292 million USD, up 21% over the same period in 2020.

Vietnam's tuna exports to this market increased continuously at double-digit rates from 2017 until now, in the first 4 months of this year alone, the value of Vietnam's tuna exports to this market increased by nearly 58%. 12 million USD compared to the same period last year.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first 3 months of 2021, Vietnam's tuna exports to the EU reached 28.4 million USD, up 8.6% over the same period in 2020. The EU continues to be Vietnam's second largest tuna import market. South, accounting for 19% of total export value.

According to statistics of Vietnam Customs, in March alone, Vietnam exported nearly 31 million USD from tuna products, up 33% over the same period in 2020, bringing the total export value in the first 3 months of 2021 to more than 63 million USD, up 2.1%.

(vasep.com.vn) By the end of February 2021, the total value of Vietnam's tuna exports to Japan reached more than US $4 million, down by 16% from the same period in 2020. It is forecasted that in the following months, tuna exports to this market still cannot recover.

Accumulated in the first two months of the year, the total export value of tuna reached 85 million USD, down by 10% compared to the same period in 2020. Vietnam has exported tuna to 54 markets around the world.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first 3 months of 2021, the weather situation was quite favorable for fishing activities, fishing fleets of Binh Dinh province still maintained the number and intensity of fishing activities, so the exploitation output increased compared to the same period of 2020.

(vasep.com.vn) According to statistics of Vietnam Customs, in January 2021, Vietnam's tuna export turnover reached 42.3 million USD, up by 6.3% over the same period in 2020.

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) The Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Vietnam (EVFTA) was a lever for tuna exports to the EU market in the fourth quarter of 2020. The value of Vietnam's tuna exports to this market increased continuously in the fourth quarter, reaching nearly 38 million USD, up 20% over the same period in 2019. As a result, the total value of exports to the EU in the whole year 2020 went up to 136 million USD, up by 2.4% compared to 2019.

That is a good news for tuna fishermen and exporters in Vietnam, particularly in Khanh Hoa province – one of leading tuna producing provinces in Vietnam.

(vasep.com.vn) Over the past 5 years, the UK has been one of the 17 largest tuna export markets for Vietnam. But in 2020, Vietnam's tuna exports to the UK were unstable. The export value of Vietnamese tuna to this market reached nearly 7 million USD, going down by 2% compared to 2019 due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic and Britain's departure from the European Union (EU) changed British consumer behavior.

In the midst of the Covid-19 epidemic, Vietnam's tuna exports to Canada in the first 11 months of 2020 still increased by 25% over the same period. The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), effective from January 14, 2019, has created leverage for tuna exports to this market.
