In the first 9 months this year, the area for pangasius farming in Mekong Delta estimated at 5,146 hectares, down 2.3% over the same period last year. Pangasius production reached 860,911 MT, up 2.5% year on year thanks to higher output in some localities such as Dong Thap province with 285,554 MT (up 6.8%), and Can Tho province with 118,035 MT (up 27.2 %).
In Sep 2016, the area for shrimp farming and the production reached positive results thanks to favourable weather condition, stable price of raw shrimp.
According to local reports, as of 20th Sep 2016, the area for black tiger shrimp farming in the country estimated at 582.7 thousand hectares, an increase of 0.6%, with the production of 174.4 thousand MT, down 2.5% year on year. In particular, the area for black tiger shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta provinces estimated at 562,501 hectares (up 1.3%), with the output of 169,012 MT (down 4.7%).
Total area for whiteleg shrimp farming in the country hit 80 thousand hectares, up 6.3%, with the volume of at 200 thousand MT, up 4.2% year on year. Of that, the area in the Mekong Delta reached 62.3 thousand hectares (up 18.3%), with the output of 151.7 thousand MT, up 11.1%. Thanks to the short farming period, higher yield and stable prices, many households turn to whiteleg shrimp farming. Therefore, the area for white shrimp farming increased sharply from early this year.

The result shows that the sector is experiencing a fairly positive recovery, especially in its two key product groups: crabs and swimming crabs. However, behind the growth figures are several concerns: export markets remain highly concentrated, raw material supply is unstable, and trade barriers from the US and EU are becoming increasingly stringent.

In Hung My commune alone, there are about 260 super-intensive shrimp farming households covering more than 265 hectares, playing a key role in local economic development.

Although total export value declined slightly due to decreases in some key markets, many other destinations continued to post strong growth, opening up room for this convenience-oriented processed segment in the coming quarters.
