Up in Vietnam pangasius sales to the UK in QII

News 08:55 26/07/2016
(seafood.vasep.com.vn) In the first 6 months of 2015, Vietnam pangasius exports to the UK was up 41% year on year. The UK was the 4th largest importer of Vietnam pangasius in the EU bloc after Spain, the Netherlands and Germany.

In Jan 2015, the shipments to the market showed the highest increase of 97.8% compared to the same period in 2014. The figure in Feb-May 2015 climbed by 12-60.5% year on year. In 2015, Vietnam’s pangasius sales to the UK hit US$46.5 million, up nearly 14% compared to 2014.

In the first 3 months of 2016, the exports to the UK saw falls of 0.6% to 28.4% over the same period last year. However, in QII/2016, the shipments to the market increased significantly from 8% to 13.7% compared to the same period in 2015.

Up to now, Vietnam pangasius exports to the UK market still have many opportunities for raising its market share. However, pangasius products from Vietnam have to compete strongly with whitefish products in this market. Imports of frozen cod and frozen haddock still account for a large proportion with 65% of total whitefish imports into the UK. Currently, whitefish products from China and Russia still dominate the UK market. With the advantage in export price, Vietnam pangasius exporters should set the strategies to boost exports to to the market.
