Pangasius imports of Mexico betters after TPP

News 09:48 02/12/2015
(vasep.com.vn) Vietnam is currently the third largest frozen seafood supplier to Mexico , just behind after China and Chile. In Q2/2015, pangasius exports to this market suddenly dropped. June imports halved from May. This also happened in frozen tilapia fillets imports from China.

Accounting for 61- 63.5% of total seafood imports, fresh/chilled/frozen fish fillet (HS 0304) continued to be the major imported seafood item, in which tilapia took up the most (34 to 36.3%), followed by pangaius and catfish HS 300462.

In H1/2015, Mexico increased imports of whitefish (cod, Alaska pollock) but as it turned to the third quarter, import value decreased from 30- 40% quarter on quarter.

Pangasius export to Mexico did not rise in the first 9 months of 2015 but it is expected to  slowly increase in the last months of this year.

In the TPP, Mexico committed to removing tax for pangasius from Vietnam in the 3rd year after the agreement enters into force. Export in 2016 - 2017 is forecast to grow better than the previous year.
