Cephalopod exports to China rose by 2 digits in the 3 months of the third quarter of 2020. In the third quarter of 2020, the export of Vietnamese cephalopod to China reached over US$13 million, up 43.8% compared to the second quarter of 2019.
In the first 9 months of the year, cephalopod exports to China reached US$30.9 million, up 49.5% over the same period in 2019. China had the strongest growth rate in the import of cephalopod from Vietnam in the third quarter and first 9 months of 2020.
Since March 2020, the Covid-19 epidemic in China has been less tense. Besides, other countries such as the US, EU, and Japan gradually loosen the quarantine measures to prevent the epidemic, so China's demand for squid and octopus to recover. Moreover, other suppliers to China have difficulty supplying goods to the Chinese market, so China increased imports from Vietnam to compensate.
In the first 9 months of 2020, in the structure of Vietnamese cephalopod exports to China, squid accounted for 91.5%, octopus made up only 8.5%. Amid the Covid-19 epidemic occurring worldwide, the demand for squid, especially dried/baked squid, tends to increase strongly in China as well as in all importers. Imported processed squid and dried/baked squid to China from Vietnam soared by 121% and 146% year-on-year, respectively. Besides, China also lifted by 47% in imports of processed octopus from Vietnam.

This development indicates that Spain is once again becoming a notable destination for Vietnamese tuna amid strong demand for tuna raw materials and products in Europe.

Many enterprises and farms in Cần Thơ, Cà Mau, and Vĩnh Long have proactively stocked early to seize opportunities. By early 2026, stocking areas in many localities had reached a high proportion of planned targets, with intensive and high-tech farming models expanding rapidly.
