Can Tho sees a modest rise in intensive pangasius farming

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) As of the end of July 2024, Can Tho City's total fishery output was estimated at 137,963 tons, a 11.32% increase compared to the same period last year. Of this, aquaculture production reached 134,669 tons, a 11.27% increase, mainly attributed to pangasius.

In 7/2024, the aquaculture area (excluding seed production areas) was estimated at 3,072 hectares, a 5.79% increase year-on-year. Specifically, the area of intensive and semi-intensive pangasius farming reached 625 hectares, a 2.97% increase year-on-year. Total fishery output was estimated at 14,700 tons (mainly fish), an 8.54% increase year-on-year, of which aquaculture contributed 13,666 tons, a 8.89% increase.

In recent times, Can Tho City's fishery sector have been actively planning aquaculture zones, focusing on developing key species; continuing to guide establishments and farming households in applying farming processes and techniques that meet food safety standards, ensuring a stable supply of seafood  products to meet consumption and export demands. The total area of aquaculture following food safety standards reached 193 hectares, including 179.2 hectares of VietGAP and 13.8 hectares of BAP+ASC (including 3.85 hectares of ASC).

According to the city's plan for sustainable aquaculture development by 2030, Can Tho aims to develop aquaculture towards large-scale, sustainable, and highly competitive commodity production, suitable for the region's ecological conditions and proactively adapting to climate change. The city will enhance productivity, output, quality, product value, and production efficiency based on appropriate production organization, synchronized investment, and the application of advanced science and technology throughout the value chain, ensuring food safety standards. Can Tho aspires to become a center for aquaculture science and technology services, especially a center for producing high-quality seafood  seed.

Tuna exports to Italy face difficulties at the end of 2024

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) After reaching a peak of nearly USD 6 million in June 2024, the export value of Vietnamese tuna to Italy has stagnated and continuously declined in the last five months of the year. Cumulatively, by December 15, 2024, export turnover to this market decreased by 18% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching over USD 30 million. Vietnamese pangasius accounts for 90% of total pangasius imports into the EU
