The official letter No. 129: Proposing to ban shrimp farmers from using Enrofloxacin

(vasep.com.vn) On 13th September 2011, Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) submitted the official letter No. 129/2011/VASEP-VPHH proposing Directorate of Fisheries (D-Fish) to promulgate the decision on banning Enrofloxacin use in shrimp farming.
In recent months, imported food notification system of Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) has reported that some shrimp shipments from Vietnam were detected Enrofloxacin residue. The National Agro Forestry and Fisheries Quality Assurance Directorate (NAFIQAD) and local shrimp enterprises intensified to monitor the antibiotic residue in shrimp products. However, monitoring the antibiotic residue on the seafood products involve farmer cooperation. If not, the problem can not be solved absolutely and creates many difficulties and increase cost for enterprises. According to current regulations, Enrofloxacin is still included in the list of limited antibiotics in fish production and farmers still have right to use it for treating liver disease on shrimp.

VASEP proposed D-Fish to consider and find out a solution on prohibiting Enrofloxacin use in shrimp farming as well as guiding farmers to use the alternative agents with an aim to avoid losses for farmers and enterprises
