In the first two months of 2024, Poland—which ranks as Vietnam's fourth-largest EU supplier of tuna—became a noteworthy market. Vietnam's tuna exports value to Poland increased by 786% in comparison to the same period last year, totaling over $2 million USD and contributing about 2% of the country's overall tuna exports revenue.
According to statistics from General Department of Vietnam Customs, canned tuna and frozen tuna meat/loin are the two main product groups exported to Poland. In the first two months of this year, canned tuna accounted for 91% of the entire exports value to Poland, making it the most popular exports product.
Over the past four years, Poland's tuna imports have been on a steady rise. Concurrently, Poland has also emerged as a tuna supplier to several EU countries, including Germany, Romania, and Italy... Consequently, Poland's tuna imports capacity is expected to continue increasing, presenting a lucrative opportunity for businesses to explore this market.
However, Vietnamese enterprises must maintain stringent quality control for their tuna shipments to the Polish market even though there are not any major technical barriers to overcome. Besides, despite the potential of the Polish market, Vietnamese tuna exports to Poland and other EU countries still face challenges due to the IUU yellow card regulation. This regulation has caused disruptions in the issuance of catch statements and catch certificates required for marine caught products exported to the EU, resulting in a shortage of domestic materials and difficulties in importing materials for Vietnamese businesses.
