Tuna exports to the US have not shown any signs of improvement

(seafood.vasep.com.vn) After a continuous decline in the fourth quarter of 2022, Vietnam's tuna exports to the US in the first three months of 2023 continued to fall deeply. Tuna export turnover to this market in this period decreased by 53%, reaching 64 million USD.

Currently, Vietnam's tuna exports to the US have all decreased over the same period, except for frozen steamed tuna (HS16 code) which increased by 20%. Compared to the same period last year, the average export price of this group of products fell by 20%.

High inventories, high inflation in the US have affected consumer consumption in the first period of 2023.

Vietnam is still the third largest tuna supplier to the US market after Thailand and Indonesia

According to statistics from the International Trade Center (ITC), US tuna imports in the first two months of 2023 are also going down compared to the same period in 2022. In which, the US tends to reduce tuna imports from Asian suppliers such as Thailand, Vietnam or Indonesia, and increases imports from countries in the same region such as Mexico or Ecuador.

Vietnam is still the third largest tuna supplier to the US market after Thailand and Indonesia. Vietnam's share in the US tuna market in the first two months of 2023 has shrunk from 21% to 11%.

The number of Vietnamese enterprises participating in exporting tuna to this market in the first quarter of 2023  also decreased to only 36 enterprises. Mariso Vietnam, Mowi Vietnam and Dragon Waves are the 3 largest exporters, accounting for 40% of total tuna export turnover to the US.

Vietnam’s tuna exports to Japan recover faster than expected

Data from Vietnam Customs shows that in October 2024 alone, tuna exports to Japan surged by 31% year-on-year, reaching nearly USD 3.5 million. This growth has offset the decline experienced in the first half of the year, raising the total export value for the first ten months of 2024 to nearly USD 28 million, a 5% increase compared to the same period last year.
