It aimed at meeting the shrimp seeds demand and ensuring the quality supply of shrimp seeds for farmer in the province. According to this plan, Viet – Uc seafood Joint Stock Company - the main investor – will start the construction of the high-quality shrimp farm in Soc Trang province in April 2017. At the first phase of the plan, a high-quality shrimp breeding center will be constructed at Vinh Hai Commune, Vinh Chau District. Once putting into operation, it will provide 3 – 4 billion juvenile shrimps for local famers.
Soc Trang is one of the largest shrimp producers in Mekong River Delta region; nonetheless, there are not any centers or farms which provide high-quality shrimp seed for local farmer, causing many challenges for shrimp farmers in the province. Therefore, the plan is hoped to help solving the difficulties that farmers are facing in shrimp culturing, especially shrimp seed’s quality, contributing to ensuring the quality of the product and diminishing the production costs. Moreover, it will help build the Viet Nam shrimp brand as the requirement of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc called for during the Conference on the development of Vietnam’s shrimp industry.
According to Ms.Quach Thi Thanh Binh, Vice-director of the province’s Fisheries Sub-Department, Soc Trang has developed shrimp aquaculture for over 20 years. However, the local farmers still have to rely on shrimp seeds imported from other central provinces and Bac Lieu, Ca Mau provinces. Once the high-quality shrimp breeding center put into operation, it will create many favorable supports for shrimp farmers such as high-quality shrimp seed with lower price.
In 2016, the province’s total shrimp aquaculture area gained 54,800 hectares, increased by 7.9 per cent in compare to 2015, in which 8,089 hectares was affected by diseases, accounted for 14.9 per cent, down 7.7 percent year – on - year. This brought the province’s total aquaculture production to nearly 140,000 tons. In 2017, the province sets the target of 45,000 hectares shrimp farming areas, with the production of 100,000 tons and focuseson improving the quality and competiveness of the shrimp product on the market.
