This rise is due to increased anchovy landings destined for fishmeal and fish oil industry, and other resources for fresh fish industry, according to the latest Statistical Bulletin prepared by the Ministry of Production (Produce).
On assessing the first five months of 2012, it has been noted that landings fell by 48 per cent over the same period last year, changing from 4,155,600 tonnes in 2011 to 2,162,100 tonnes.
According to Produce, in May, 2012 about 1.16 million tonnes of fishing resources were landed for the fishmeal and fish oil industry, representing 4.5 per cent more than in the same month of 2011 (1,109,100 tonnes).
Between January and May this year about 1,630,800 tonnes of fishery resources were used for indirect consumption, compared with 3,578,100 tonnes in the same period of 2011, that is to say, 54.4 per cent less.
For direct human consumption about 83,900 tonnes of seafood resources were landed in May compared to 118,200 tonnes in the same month of 2011.
During the first five months of 2012, a total of 531,300 tonnes of resources was used for direct consumption, representing 8 per cent less than last year (577,500 tonnes).
For the preparation of frozen products about 48,300 tonnes were landed last May while in the same month of 2011 about 62,000 tonnes had been landed.
Between January and May this year, the accumulated landings for this industry totalled about 266,800 tonnes, representing 12.1 per cent less than in the same period of 2011, when 303,400 tonnes were landed.
On the other hand, the fishery resources used by the canning industry in May 2012 totalled 4,100 tonnes compared with 25,000 tonnes in the same month last year.
Between January and May, there was an increase of 32.4 per cent in the resources used by the canning industry: 73,600 tonnes compared to 108,900 tonnes in the same period of 2011.
Landings for direct human consumption as fresh fish reached about 29,300 tonnes last May while in the same month last year they had totalled 28,600 tonnes.
In the first five months of 2012, about 175,300 tonnes of resources were landed to be consumed as fresh fish, representing 15 per cent over the same period in 2011 (152,400 tonnes).
