In October 2022, shellfish exports reached USD 14.3 million, continuing to decrease by 4%, after reaching nearly USD 37 million, down 6% over the same period last year and down 11% compared to the previous quarter.
In the third quarter, the main shellfish product was clams, accounting for 67% of the value, with USD 24.7 million, down 19% over the same period. Other shellfish species such as scallops and snails all accounted for over 10% and all had an increased export value over the same period. In addition, exports of oysters and scallops also tend to increase.
Accumulated in the first 10 months of the year, shellfish exports reached over US$124 million, up 9% over the same period last year. In which, clam exports accounted for 70%, reaching over USD 87 million, down 4%; The rest are products such as scallops, snails, oysters.
In the first 10 months of 2022, the main import markets of Vietnam's shellfish products include the EU accounted for 64%, the US accounted for 11%, the CPTPP countries accounted for 13%, Taiwan accounted for 7% and the UK accounted for over 4. %.
In the third quarter, the export of shellfish to the EU market decreased by 15% over the same period, reaching 21 million USD. Accumulated in the first 9 months of the year, shellfish exports to the EU reached nearly $70 million, of which clams reached $60 million, up 7%.
The main markets in the bloc include Italy, Spain, Denmark, Portugal and the Netherlands, accounting for 96% of shellfish exports to the EU. In the third quarter, only Denmark and the Netherlands sharply increased imports of shellfish from Vietnam (up 114% and 61% respectively), the remaining 3 markets decreased imports: Italy decreased by 1%, Portugal decreased by 44% and Spain down 36%. However, in the first 9 months of 2022, only Portugal reduced imports of Vietnamese shellfish by 33%, other markets in the bloc recorded positive growth.
Shellfish exports to the CPTPP bloc focus mainly on the Japanese market, accounting for more than 9% of the total exports. After declining in the first quarter, exports to this market recovered slightly in the second quarter and increased sharply by 59% in the third quarter to more than 4 million USD. By the end of September 2022, shellfish exports to Japan reached over 10 million USD, an increase of 11% over the same period last year, of which clams were 1.3 million USD, snails were 4.3 million USD, scallop 1.6 million USD.
Shellfish exports to the US have decreased continuously since the beginning of the year and fell the most in the third quarter, down 39% to nearly 4 million USD. In the first 9 months of 2022, shellfish exports to the US reached over US$12 million, down 27% over the same period last year. In which, clam products accounted for nearly 70% with 8 million USD.
Exports of shellfish in 2022 are expected to reach about 150 million USD, an increase of about 6% compared to 2021, of which clams alone account for 70% with a value of about 105 million USD.

In recent years, shrimp exports to this market have fluctuated in line with Japan’s broader economic and consumption cycles, yet Japan remains a major, high-value destination with stringent standards.

According to Vietnam Customs statistics, export turnover to this market reached nearly USD 3 million in January–February 2026, up 101% year-on-year and significantly higher than the same period in 2024. This development indicates that Spain is once again becoming a notable destination for Vietnamese tuna amid strong demand for tuna raw materials and products in Europe.

Many enterprises and farms in Cần Thơ, Cà Mau, and Vĩnh Long have proactively stocked early to seize opportunities. By early 2026, stocking areas in many localities had reached a high proportion of planned targets, with intensive and high-tech farming models expanding rapidly.

The U.S. remains the largest importer of Vietnamese tilapia fillets, with export turnover reaching USD 40 million—an increase of up to 499% compared to 2024. This impressive growth reflects strong demand in the U.S. market, as supply from competing countries such as China has been constrained by tariffs and rising production costs.

In key farming areas such as Tuy Phước and Tuy Phước Đông, farmers are focusing on rehabilitating ponds, repairing infrastructure, and treating the environment in preparation for the 2026 crop.
