China and South Korea are becoming the newly emerging bluefin markets, as South Australia’s tuna exports to the two countries soar dramatically. The region’s tuna industry has said the new export boom is boosting flagging prices and attracting interest from Chinese investors.

(vasep.com.vn) In 2013, exports of processed tuna products hit US$233 million, rising 22 percent and making up 48 percent of the country’s total tuna exports. While exports of dried/frozen/live/fresh tuna products hit US$257 million, down 22 percent with the proportion of 52 percent.

(vasep.com.vn) In 2013, Khanh Hoa province exported its tuna to 14 markets with export turnover of US$97 million, down 45 percent in volume and 62 percent in value over 2012. In the year, together with decline in tuna export price, the market share of Khanh Hoa tuna in importing markets was slashed.

(vasep.com.vn) The Vietnam Seafood Festival this year will take place in Phu Yen province from March 28 to 2 April 2014. The festival aims to honor potentiality of seafood sector and look for investments into Vietnam seafood sector as well as the central southern coastal region including Phu Yen.

(vasep.com.vn) In 2014, Binh Dinh province plans to attire investments in its 3 new projects on purchasing, processing and exporting ocean tuna products in Quy Nhon city, according to the province's Center for Trading Promotion.

(vasep.com.vn) According to Phu Yen Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, tuna catch of the locality in 2013 reached only 4,200 MT; over 2,000 MT lower than that of the previous years. In 2013, the province exported US$28 million.

Seen as the world’s country with the highest tuna potential, Indonesia’s annual tuna production total in 2012 was 613,557 tons according to the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. Being positioned between the world’s two key tuna-producing oceans, the Indian and Pacific Ocean has allowed its production to reach an annual income of millions of dollars. The country has become important for the global tuna market, both in terms of resource and trade.

The WTO is to review this month whether the United States’ efforts to revise its “dolphinsafe” tuna labelling scheme is in full compliance with the World Trade Organization (WTO) rules with the creation of a compliance panel. The decision marks the most recent development in a longstanding dispute between the US and Mexico over the policy.

Skipjack tuna prices are continuing to fall around the world as a result of “too much fish” in Thailand, the world’s largest producer of skipjack tuna.
