Phu Yen: Sharp fall in ocean tuna catch
(vasep.com.vn) According to Phu Yen Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, tuna catch of the locality in 2013 reached only 4,200 MT; over 2,000 MT lower than that of the previous years. In 2013, the province exported US$28 million.
The decline in local tuna catch was attributable to strong competition with other provinces (Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa) which apply tuna handlines using lights. While fishermen in Phu Yen mainly use tuna longline fishing. Besides, tuna price fell sharply, also affecting to tuna sector in Phu Yen.
According to Vietnam Customs, in 2013, Vietnam exported US$526 million of tuna products, down 7,2 percent year-on-year.
